Back-to-School in Style

Children from Boys Town Nevada are grateful for the new school clothing received from Turnberry Associates as part of the national Empty Hanger program.

Call it a fashion show with a compassionate twist.

Back-to-school looks from Kohl's were modeled for an excited audience at the Boys Town Nevada Intervention and Assessment Center during a recent event sponsored by Turnberry Associates' Town Square development  The models were youth from Boys Town Nevada, and the clothes were theirs to keep. The children walked with confidence down the runway in their new outfits, shoes and back packs for the upcoming school year.

"So many of our kids come to us empty-handed, without appropriate clothing or supplies to help them succeed at school", said Tom Waite, Boys Town Nevada Executive Director. "Donations like this go far in increasing their confidence at school, and in turn, helping them be successful in the classroom."

The fashion show and clothing were funded by Turnberry Associates' Town Square and its part of its national Empty Hanger program, a national initiative aimed at supplying back-to-school clothes to children in need.  This is the second year Turnberry graciously sponsored the event.

Shadow Hills Baptist Church Women's Ministry and the Young Adult Ministry of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints donated backpacks and school supplies to each of the children of Boys Town Nevada.  Expertise Cosmetology Institute and Smashbox Cosmetics of Nordstrom contributed hair and makeup services for the event.  Lunch was provided for all attendees courtesy of Costco and Albertsons.

Prior to the event, wish lists were collected from Boys Town Nevada children, along with their sizes. With appropriate clothing options and the individual needs and styles of each child in mind, Elizabeth Muto, Boys Town Development Director and Stacy Gold, Turnberry spokesperson, shopped for each child prior to the event.

"We did the best we could to get them exactly what they wanted and they were thrilled," said Gold.

The Empty Hanger program began in 2003 in Aventura, Fla., after Turnberry learned that children in the foster care system in Florida received an annual $200 stipend for clothing.

"The bottom line is, obviously with the high cost of clothing and shoes, they don't receive enough money to really buy all the clothes they need," Gold said.  "As a leading shopping center developer, Turnberry executives felt there was an opportunity to involve national retailers in this worthwhile endeavor."

With another successful year of the Empty Hanger program, Turnberry has made a positive impact on the community even before their unveiling of the much anticipated Town Square.

Boys Town Nevada is grateful to be the recipient of their continued generosity.
