Boys Town Nevada is an example to the community on how to become more water efficient, thanks to a partnership with the Water Conservation Coalition (WCC) and nearly 40 volunteers who provided massive indoor water-smart upgrades to the Treatment Family Homes.
Each of Boys Town Nevada’s five Treatment Family Homes was completely upgraded with water-efficient appliances, fixtures and water systems. This much needed upgrade was the second phase of the Water Conservation Coalition’s (WCC) plan to renovate the interior and exterior of Boys Town Nevada homes and a portion of the 22-acres of surrounding land.
“This project not only benefits the children at Boys Town Nevada,” Jena Antonchuk, WCC Executive Director, “but it also helps demonstrate to area homeowners what they can do to make their homes more water efficient.”
Plumbers and pipefitters from Local Union 525 volunteered their time and expertise to install nearly 150 new toilets, washing machines, showerheads, dishwashers, water heaters, faucets and re-circulating pumps.
“We believe in the work Boys Town Nevada does on behalf of neglected and abused children in our community,” said Lou Salazar, a representative for Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 525. “When I told my men their labor would be improving the lives of these kids, they couldn’t wait to volunteer their time. We’re just glad to be able to make a difference.”

The water-smart appliances, fixtures, faucets and landscaping are expected to save nearly two million gallons of water annually and substantially lower the cost of running each home. In the first phase of the project last year, grass was removed from some of residences and upgraded to water-efficient desert landscaping. In the final phase of the project over the next few months, the WCC will add water-saving recreational areas throughout the 22-acre campus.
“I am very touched by the generosity of the WCC, in conjunction with Plumbers and Pipefitter Local 525, and Grundfos Pumps Corporation, said Tom Waite, Boys Town Nevada Executive Director. “Everyone has worked together to improve the efficiency of our homes and equip them with the most modern, water-smart appliances available. Long after our children have graduated from Boys Town Nevada, they will remember this incredible labor of love.”
Danny, a 10-year-old Boys Town Nevada youth, is thankful people helped his home. “I love all of our new stuff that saves water,” said Danny. “It makes me feel good that people help us.”
