More than 75 volunteers taught an invaluable lesson to Boys Town children, by donating their hearts, labor, time and talents Oct. 27. The group spent hours raking, painting and cleaning up debris at Boys Town Nevada residential homes in northwest Las Vegas.
Their efforts were part of “Make a Difference, a day coordinated by The Volunteer Center of Nevada, in cooperation with MGM Mirage, Bank of America, and Stations Casinos. Boys Town Nevada was fortunate enough to be chosen as one of the sites to receive renovations in a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors.
“This is a great example of a neighborhood and area businesses teaming up to make this a better place for children,” Councilman Ricki Barlow said. “Making a difference is something that everyone can be a part of.”
“Make a Difference Day is about people and community organizations coming together,” Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian said. “Through the collaborative efforts of the Metropolitan Police Department, city of Las Vegas and area residents, we can protect our neighborhoods and preserve our quality of life.”
At the end of the event, all volunteers were treated to a catered lunch, compliments of Jason’s Deli, and a $250 US Airways travel voucher was raffled off. A player on The Prestige Soccer Team was the lucky winner of the gift card.
“The kids and I decided before we came out today that if one of us won, we would donate the voucher right back to Boys Town,” said Prestige Soccer Coach Jason Kangas. “My players are a great bunch of kids and we all just feel so fortunate that we are able to make a difference for such a great organization.”
